PREMISE-:
Impoverished priest Harihar Ray, dreaming of a better life for himself and his family, leaves his rural Bengal village in search of work. The children enjoy the small pleasures of their difficult life, while their parents suffer the daily indignities heaped upon them.

THIS REVIEW CONTAINS SPOILERS.

THE PROBLEMS-:

  • A very harsh and turbulent storm COINCIDENTALLY occurs while Durga is sick.
  • It is very convenient that the storyline of 'Hari finding work' and the 'main' storyline revolving around the lives of the rest of family happened to coincide in such a way that the former severely affected the latter (The house remains in a dilapidated condition BECAUSE of Hari's inability to quickly find work, which eventually leads to Durga's death). I mean, if Hari had come back home even ONE week earlier, the house would've been fixed and Durga wouldn’t have died.
  • It’s convenient that APU was the one who found the hidden necklace and not any other member of the family or the village.

THE POSITIVES-:

  • The Characterization
  • The Performances
  • The Cinematography and Camera-work
  • The Production and Set design
  • The Background score
  • The moments showing the innocence and the playfulness of children were brilliantly executed and were very heartwarming and enjoyable to watch. The moments depicting the daily struggles of the adults and the deterioration of the senile were equally impactful and heartbreaking to witness.
RATING -: 7/10
