DIRECTED BY-: Ridley Scott STARRING-: Leonardo Dicaprio Russell Crowe Mark Strong YEAR OF RELEASE-: 2008 PREMISE-: A CIA agent on the ground in Jordan hunts down a powerful terrorist leader while being caught between the unclear intentions of his American supervisors and Jordan Intelligence.
THIS REVIEW CONTAINS SPOILERS.
THE NEGATIVES-: - During the RPG attack in the beginning of the film, Ferris LUCKILY survives with no major injuries.
- Hoffman’s guy “Skip” CONVENIENTLY fails to bring Karami in when his van CONVENIENTLY gets into an awkward position on a narrow road.
- Why did Karami run when Skip was approaching him? How did he know Skip wasn’t Hani’s guy?
- Why did Ferris want to bring Omar in even BEFORE Al-Saleem had contacted him? Wasn’t the purpose of his entire plan to get Al-Saleem to contact Omar Sadiki?
- If for some inexplicable reason Ferris DID want to bring Omar in before Al-Saleem contacted him, then why didn’t he do that IMMEDIATELY after the staged attack instead of waiting till the NEXT day?
- The CIA conveniently, for no clear reason, fail to track Al-Saleem down after he finally makes a phone call about Omar Sadiki. Didn't the CIA have ANY contingency plans ?
- According to the film, Hoffman didn’t have Aisha under surveillance because he didn’t think Ferris was serious enough about her. But, Hoffman would’ve SURELY known about Ferris going to Aisha’s house for dinner, right? I suppose it’s CONVENIENT that Ferris and Aisha didn’t do things that would qualify as “serious” in Hoffman’s mind.
- In the climax, Hani and his men arrive to save Ferris JUST BEFORE Al-Saleem’s men are about to kill him.
THE POSITIVES-: - Everyone in the cast gave a good performance.
- The action scenes were decently shot.
- The music and dialogues were satisfying enough and were utilized appropriately.
- Although they were very simple and straightforward, Ferris and Aisha’s interactions were still a refreshing part of the film as they imbued a sense of character and personality which was missing from an otherwise very plot-centric story.
RATING-: 5/10
