THIS REVIEW CONTAINS SPOILERS.
THE NEGATIVES—: - Greer’s reasoning for not assigning security detail around Jack and his family after Sean escapes prison felt very nonsensical. Even though Jack’s house is at a remote location, that doesn’t mean that it is COMPLETELY untraceable. Further, Jack and Cathy’s places of work, and Sally’s school, are NOT at remote locations and it would be extremely easy for anyone to target them there. We can’t even infer that the reason Greer felt no security was necessary was because he thought that Sean would not go through that much effort to harm the Ryan family, because Greer would’ve SURELY been privy to Sean’s rage-fueled taunts at Ryan in the court AND the fact that Sean had Jack’s face (newspaper cutout) plastered on the walls of his prison cell. Considering all this, it’s impossible for anyone to not come to the conclusion that Sean clearly and desperately wants revenge on Jack. Given these facts, it’s also stupid on Jack’s part for not asking for security detail from the CIA. While yes, it would mean taking favors from the CIA and being in their “debt”, it would still ensure the safety of his family - something which would be his PRIORITY in that moment.
- THE ATTACK ON THE RYAN FAMILY
- The hitman assigned to assassinate Jack STUPIDLY waits a long time trailing him before trying to shoot. If we assume that he waited because there was another man on the street, it’s very lucky that that man happened to be on that street at that EXACT moment.
- Ryan LUCKILY spots the assassin following him at just the right time.
- The assassin is LUCKILY shot JUST BEFORE he can kill Jack.
- Cathy is COINCIDENTALLY on her phone at the EXACT TIME Jack tries calling her to warn her about the attack.
- Plot armor : LUCKILY, none of the bullets fired by Sean hit Cathy or Sally. They also LUCKILY survive a brutal car crash.
- The 'Rare Books' shop CONVENIENTLY has a wire malfunctioning at the EXACT spot the police has hidden a camera.
- The planning of Holmes’ visit to America (Jack’s house) takes place JUST BEFORE the SAS attack Miller’s camp in North Africa.
- Why weren’t the SAS shown Sean, Kevin, and Annette’s photographs BEFORE attacking their camp in North Africa so that there would be NO delay in the identification of their dead bodies ?
- The bad guys conveniently miss all the shots they take at the good guys.
- Why didn’t everyone sail away in one of the boats while sabotaging the other one?
- Sean LUCKILY runs out of bullets JUST BEFORE he jumps on Jack’s boat.
- During their scuffle, instead of easily attacking Jack’s legs, Sean stupidly decides to repeatedly attack the rod Jack’s using to protect his upper body.
- Jack LUCKILY kills Sean and jumps overboard JUST BEFORE the burning boat crashes into jutting rocks and explodes.
THE POSITIVES—: - Everyone in the cast gave a good performance. Harrison Ford in particular was masterfully able to sell the character of Jack Ryan with authenticity and relatability.
- While the action scenes did rely heavily on plot armor in many instances, they were still staged and executed in a very engaging and thrilling manner.
- Even though Jack’s family isn’t given much screen time, the times they do show up on screen were utilized efficiently to make the audience care for their fates. Jack and Cathy’s interactions with Sally were also written in a pretty cute and adorable way.
RATING-: 6/10
