DIRECTED BY-: Kartiki Gonsalves YEAR OF RELEASE-: 2022 PREMISE-: Bomman and Bellie, a couple in South India, devote their lives to caring for an orphaned baby elephant named Raghu, forging a family like no other that tests the barrier between the human and the animal world.
THIS REVIEW CONTAINS MILD SPOILERS.
THE NEGATIVES:
I think the film would’ve benefitted from a longer runtime so that the following things could’ve been fleshed out in a better way-: - Insight into how the forest department collaborates with the local caretakers — how much are the caretakers paid, what arrangements (if any) are made for their residence, and why exactly Raghu HAD to be separated from Bomman and Bellie.
- Details about the human activities that are causing the elephants to wander into local villages and towns.
- Some more scenes of bonding between Bomman and Bellie would’ve made their decision to marry each other feel more organic.
THE POSITIVES: - The cinematography was consistently gorgeous and all the animals were captured on camera with extreme proficiency.
- The background score was decent and served the story well, even if it got a little too saccharine at moments.
- It was quite evident that Bellie was more of a central focus of the film compared to Bomman, because she was given the most amount of depth and emotional baggage, which was very engaging to watch and helped in instantly connecting her to the audience.
- The film does a fantastic job of establishing the special and unique bond between the elephants and their caretakers, which is why the final few minutes are very effective at being emotional and impactful.
