Tenet

DIRECTED BY-:
Christopher Nolan
STARRING-:
John David Washington
Robert Pattinson
Elizabeth Debicki

YEAR OF RELEASE-:
2020
PREMISE-:
Armed with only one word, Tenet, and fighting for the survival of the entire world, a Protagonist journeys through a twilight world of international espionage on a mission that will unfold in something beyond real time.

THE PROBLEMS-:

  • The film primarily struggles in the execution of its plot and characterization, both of which are, dare I say, the fundamental ‘’Tenets’’ of storytelling. The plot is overly complicated, convoluted, contrived and illogical. The characters barely have any depth and are only present to move the plot from point A to point B. They have the most generic goals substantiated by the most basic of motivations. The absence of humanizing and endearing interactions between characters also caused me to not particularly care about any of their fates in the end.
  • There is also an overabundance of expository dialogue in almost EVERY scene which makes for a very frustrating viewing experience and makes the film feel extremely rushed even with a 150 minute runtime.

THE POSITIVES-:

  • Robert Pattinson’s performance and the way he embodied his character was enjoyable and entertaining to watch.
  • The direction, cinematography and the camera-work during the action scenes are all technically top-notch.
  • The groovy soundtrack immensely elevated the film and made the action scenes engaging and exhilarating.
RATING -: 5/10
